Nom porté dans les Landes et les Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Peut-être une variante de Coussan, nom d'un village des Hautes-Pyrénées. On trouve aussi dans le Nord et en Belgique la forme Coussens, qui correspond à Cousin (voir ce nom).
